The Global Committee of the Deacons has decided to increase our Global Mission initiative with furthering the education of the congregation on the benefits of Fair Trade as well as the expansion of the Fair Trade sales at the church to Rishi tea from China and Import Peace olive oil from Palestine. Both of these organizations have helped foster social and economic development in their specific regions.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade products refers to the direct exchange of goods based on principles of economic and social justice. Fair Trade empowers low-income artisans and farmers around the globe to better their conditions, and promotes understanding between them and people of devolved regions. Fair Trade relationships improve the lives of 5 million people in Africa, Asia and Latin America (The Conscious Consumer, 8). Fair Trade promotes healthy working conditions and fair wages while also providing more opportunities to those who are economically disadvantaged with an emphasis on gender equity, many times providing women a way to make a living.
As a committee we felt that promoting Fair Trade through education and the sale of these specific products directly tied in with the Global Mission of Second by enabling and empowering farmers and artisans in underdeveloped countries to sustain themselves.
