Throughout the year, we offer special events and classes for the congregation and community which go beyond the scope of our regular Christian Education programming. Thought provoking speakers, inspirational music programs, helpful workshops, topical teaching/discussion events and our annual interactive reenactment of the first Christmas, "Journey to Bethlehem", challenge and entertain as we grow in our faith.

Book Study - The Art of Political Murder: Who killed the Bishop By Francisco Goldman It’s been 10 years, April, 26th, 1998 that Bishop Juan Gerardi was murdered. Gerardi was the bishop and human rights leader of Guatemala who had 4 days prior presented a 1400 page volume on the genocidal terror campaign led by the Guatemalan army that left 200,000 people dead and more disappeared. The majority of victims were indigenous. What began as a journalistic piece for the New Yorker, grew into a book of investigative writing that leaves no stone unturned. Francisco Goldman, a novelist, is a child of a Guatemalan mother and a Jewish-American father. He was actually baptized in the same church where Monsignor Gerardi was priest. No stranger to Guatemala, his works of fiction have garnered many awards. This book is his first work of non-fiction. The book reads like a page-turning thriller.Anyone who is interested in Guatemala, its people, and its politics won’t want to miss reading this. The book study group will meet on June 11th at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Group leaders: Jane Piper and Ann Alexander

Clothes Closet News: SPRING and SUMMER Clothes Needed Now is the time to bring all of those warm weather clothes that do not need to be dry cleaned. We would appreciate receiving no more winter clothes at this time. Towels, sheets and other good used linens are also needed. Thanks for you cooperation with Central Presbyterian.
Join Us Tuesdays We wonder why more people don't join us at 7:00-8:00 a.m. every Tuesday morning for Bible Study in Meeting Room A. You probably just don't know what we're up to. Using the standard 4-selection lectionary for the following Sunday, we read the selections and discuss them as the Spirit leads us. Coffee, juice, and sometimes, "nibbles" are provided. Promptness is not required and leaving early is understood. All of the regulars keep coming back, because we don't want to miss the experience. Let us share it with you.
I've enjoyed the warm camaraderie and the Bible Study. It's always an enriching start to the week I hope others wil come to explore the Bible with us. - Cindy Bowman
Recycle an Old Hearing Aid "Listen my children and you shall hear..." But what if the child can't hear? There is help for that child, and it may be as near as your dresser drawer.Children's Mercy Hospital and Speech Clinic has an arrangement with a company that recycles old hearing aids so that hearing-impaired children can join the hearing world. Any kind, any condition of hearing aid will be helpful. Do you have one you can contribute?
Simply put the hearing aid in a plastic bag, and put it in the box on the platform in Westminster Hall. If you enclose your name and address, your donation will be acknowledged. The acknowledgment can be used as a tax receipt.
Don't Throw Away Those Old Cell Phones! Your old cell phone can help residents of the Newhouse domestic violence shelter. Simply drop your old phone and battery (no chargers or accessories please) in the designated plastic bin on the north platform in Westminster Hall.
Electronic Giving Comes to Second Presbyterian Church Save time, simplify your life, and support your church all at the same time! Second is keeping up with the times by offering our members a new way to give. Our new Electronic Giving program is an automated program that will allow you to make contributions in the same manner that many already use to pay other financial commitments.
Here is how this new giving option works:
You authorize a specified amount of money to be electronically transferred directly from your checking or savings account to the church's account. You also specify the frequency of the transfer.
It is fast, safe, and easy! In fact, it is less risky than checks, as it cannot be lost, stolen, or destroyed. The electronic transfer will cost you nothing. Your regular Contributions Statement will reflect your gifts for your tax records, and your bank statements will provide you with a record of transfer as additional proof of your contributions.
One simple and easy to use authorization form can begin or change your electronic contribution amount. The authorization form and additional information are both available by contacting the church financial office or printing it from this website.
