Amazing Grace Written by Eric Metaxas, this is an accessible biography of the remarkable life of the British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). It chronicles his extraordinary role as a human rights activist, cultural reformer and member of Parliament where he fought for twenty years to abolish the British slave trade which he won in 1807. However, the victory to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies was achieved just three days before he died in 1833.
"Metaxas's story reads like fiction and brilliantly captures the shocking accomplishment of the man who fundamentally changed humanity's attitude toward the suffering of others." David S. Kidder, co-author of The Intellectual Devotional.
Faith and Politics In his book Faith and Politics, Senator John Danforth says, "If Christianity is supposed to be a ministry of reconciliation and has become, instead, a divisive force in American political life, something is terribly wrong, and we should correct it." He criticizes the Republican Party for becoming beholden to the Christian Right. No one should presume to embody God's truth, he states, as he takes to task the Right for its focus on wedge issues that drive people apart and that create "tests" for religious and political orthodoxy. We must, Danforth appeals, leave divisive party politics behind so we can address our country's problems and move forward together. Also, he reminds us how vitally important it is for us all to be citizens who participate, who vote, who encourage our leaders to focus on pressing problems, not wedge issues such as abortion, stem cell research, gay marriage, and displays of religion in the public square among other issues. He writes openly about political life and above all with a too-rare voice of clarity and reason.
