Opportunities abound for volunteers in our community and beyond for people of all skill levels, from Habitat for Humanity to tutoring school children in reading. Hundreds of our members are involved in volunteer ministry.

A Tea Party for Our Office Volunteers

Many members of Second Presbyterian volunteer in the church office during the week. They help the staff in many ways - answering the telephone, folding and labeling the Messenger, assisting with special projects, providing Monday morning support and much more. To show their appreciation, the staff invites them to a Tea Party in the Spring.

Feeding the Hungry at Cross-Lines
Eight times in 2008* a group of volunteers from Second Presbyterian serves lunch at the Cross-Lines Argentine Food Kitchen. Members of the Cross-Lines Task Force - Cindy Bowman, Lydia Jeter, Chris McDonald - take turns planning and organizing the lunch, and other volunteers from Second greet the clients and help prepare and serve the food. The location of the kitchen is easy to find and the atmosphere is clean and pleasant. Those who are served are all ages and races. Between 150-300 people are served each day. These lunches nourish many hungry people who so appreciate a hot meal.
*Second Mondays in Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Sep, Oct, and Nov.
We will serve lunch at the Cross Lines Argentine Food Kitchen on Monday, March 10.

Please help us with this ministry by:
(1) Baking cookies, cupcakes, brownies. Leave these in the church kitchen on Sunday, March 9, and mark them for "Cross Lines".
(2) Preparing and serving this meal, followed by clean-up at Cross Lines on March 10. Call Cindy Bowman at 913-642-6854, if you can help anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Food Pantry Donations
Many in our city are without food and a hot meal. The Central Presbyterian Food Pantry is grateful for your donations in the past and wants you to know that your contributions to their shelves have made an impact on those whom they serve.

They are in contstant need ot canned goods and non-perishables, so they encourage you to continue to leave items for them on the north platform in Westminster Hall next to the other donation containers.

Mentors Needed
Presbyterian Children's Services recently partnered with Operation Breakthrough to mentor school-age children who are at risk of abuse or neglect. Though PCS has a 95-year history of ministry with children in the State of Missouri and operates homes in Moberly, Springfield, St. Louis, and Farmington, this is its first program within the bounds of Kansas City. In November the Deacons of Second appropriated $5,000 form Mission Sustaining Fund monies to assist in the start-up of the project. Carolyn Nesbitt and Lynn Durbin are among the first group of mentors. Speak to them for more information about the program, or contact Rich Maxwell, Regional Development Director, Presbyterian Children's Services, 913-523-4789.

Recycle an Old Hearing Aid
"Listen my children and you shall hear..." But what if the child can't hear? There is help for that child, and it may be as near as your dresser drawer. Children's Mercy Hospital and Speech Clinic has an arrangement with a company that recycles old hearing aids so that hearing-impaired children can join the hearing world. Any kind, any condition of hearing aid will be helpful. Do you have one you can contribute?

Simply put the hearing aid in a plastic bag, and put it in the box on the platform in Westminster Hall. If you enclose your name and address, your donation will be acknowledged. The acknowledgment can be used as a tax receipt.
